Learning to Hear God's Voice: From Exposure to Experience

Have you ever wondered what it truly means to know God's voice? Many people think they know God because they've been exposed to Him at church, but there's a profound difference between knowing God through exposure and knowing Him through experience. This difference determines whether we can truly discern His voice and understand His will for our lives.

The Difference Between Exposure and Experience

Consider the relationship between a parent and child. A two-year-old knows their father's voice intimately. They know his character, his nature, and they understand that when they approach him, he will drop everything to pick them up and hold them. This knowledge doesn't come from occasional meetings—it comes from living life together, experiencing both the highs and lows in close relationship.

This same principle applies to our relationship with God. You might meet a celebrity and claim to know them, but until you've done life with someone—experienced abundance and difficulty together—you only have surface-level knowledge.

Why Proximity Matters in Faith

God longs to be known through a deep experiential journey where we are actually doing life with Him. Many people think they know God because of church exposure, yet there is a depth of intimacy and relationship with the Lord that only comes from proximity—from walking closely with Him through life's circumstances.

You come to know God and His character through proximate experience. This is why the very names of God are rooted in experiential context:

  • Jehovah Jireh(The Lord will provide) - Known by those who experienced God's faithfulness in extreme lack

  • Jehovah Rapha(The Lord who heals) - Revealed to those who witnessed miraculous healing

  • Jehovah Shalom(The Lord is my peace) - Discovered by those who found peace in chaos

  • Jehovah Ra(The Lord is my shepherd) - Understood by those who experienced His guidance

Moses and the Burning Bush: A Divine Encounter

The story of Moses and the burning bush in Exodus 3 provides a beautiful picture of how God reveals His voice and character. Moses, a Hebrew raised in Egyptian royalty who became a murderer and exile, was tending sheep in the wilderness when he encountered something extraordinary—a bush that burned but wasn't consumed.

What Made Moses Approach the Bush?

Moses had gone to "the far side of the wilderness," which suggests God was already at work before the burning bush encounter. The unconsumed burning bush was enticing, provocative—something you couldn't look away from. Some scholars believe this may have been a manifestation of Christ Himself.

When God saw Moses approach, He called out: "Moses, Moses!" This reveals something crucial—God initiates the conversation. He doesn't wait for us to find Him; He actively pursues relationship with us.

Holy Ground: Understanding God's Nature

God's first instruction was profound: "Do not come any closer. Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground." This wasn't just about respect—it was about recognizing the overwhelming holiness and power of God's presence.

Moses was standing before the self-existent One who holds all existence together, someone so holy and powerful that He could completely erase Moses from reality. When God revealed Himself as "the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob," Moses hid his face in fear.

Three Essential Characteristics of God's Nature

Through Moses' encounter, we discover three fundamental aspects of God's character that are essential for hearing His voice:

1. God is All-Loving

The context of Exodus 3 reveals that God heard His people's groaning in slavery and was moved with compassion. Scripture says He was "concerned" for them. God's love drove Him to initiate a rescue mission. This same unconditional love extends to us today through Christ's sacrifice.

Some people think they're too far gone for God's love, but the intensity God showed in rescuing His people from Egypt is the same love He has for you. He will go to any length to bring you to Himself.

2. God is All-Powerful

God's holiness and power are beyond our comprehension. Our finite minds can't scratch the surface of God's greatness. Yet this all-powerful God chooses to use us as part of His plan. He can empower you to do His will, no matter how inadequate you might feel.

3. God is All-Knowing and Trustworthy

When Moses questioned God's plan, God essentially said, "You'll worship Me on this very mountain after you've delivered My people." God knows the future, and His directions are always right. Even when we don't understand circumstances—like why some are healed and others aren't—God remains trustworthy.

The plans He has for you are not only good, they're right. This trustworthiness must be foundational to how we approach God in learning His will.

The Foundation: Your Relationship with God

Everything about hearing God's voice stands on whether you have a relationship with Him. While God can speak outside of relationship, the access and intimacy available to His children is incomparable to what others experience.

Just as a father's children have different access than neighborhood kids, your relationship with God determines the depth of communication available to you. If you don't have a relationship with Jesus, this is the starting point for everything else.

Moving from "I Am Who I Am" to Knowing His Will

When Moses asked what to tell the Israelites about God's name, God responded with the mysterious "I AM WHO I AM." This wasn't evasiveness—it was God saying, "Moses, you're standing in front of a burning bush asking Me questions. You know who I am."

God was challenging Moses to have faith and trust Him. Sometimes we pray for something, God answers, and we can hardly believe it happened. God wants us to recognize His voice and trust His character based on our experience with Him.

Life Application

This week, challenge yourself to move from mere exposure to God to genuine experience with Him. Instead of just attending church or reading about God, actively seek to do life with Him. Pay attention to how He reveals His character in your daily circumstances.

Start each day asking God to show you His nature—His love, power, and trustworthiness—through your experiences. When you face challenges, look for how He might be revealing Himself as Jehovah Jireh, your provider, or Jehovah Shalom, your peace.

Consider these questions as you pursue deeper relationship with God:

  • Am I content with surface-level exposure to God, or am I actively seeking experiential knowledge of His character?

  • What circumstances in my life right now might be opportunities for God to reveal His nature to me?

  • Do I truly believe that God is all-loving, all-powerful, and all-knowing, even when I don't understand His ways?

  • How can I position myself for greater proximity to God this week?

Remember, knowing God's voice comes through relationship, and relationship is built through shared experience. As you walk closely with Him through life's ups and downs, you'll begin to recognize His character, trust His nature, and discern His voice with increasing clarity.
