The Biblical Mindset for Money: Understanding God's Perspective on Finances
Money is one of the most talked-about topics in our daily lives, yet it's often one of the most uncomfortable subjects to discuss in church. However, Jesus spoke about money frequently, and the Bible contains numerous principles about how we should handle our finances. Understanding God's perspective on money isn't about getting rich quick or treating God like an ATM machine - it's about recognizing that our financial decisions are deeply spiritual matters that affect every area of our lives.
Why Does Money Matter Spiritually?
Money Is a Spiritual Matter
The first truth we must understand is that money is not just a physical or financial concern - it's fundamentally a spiritual matter. First Timothy 6:10 tells us, "For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pains."
Notice the scripture doesn't say money itself is evil. Rather, it's the love of money that becomes problematic. When we worship wealth and resources instead of God, it can actually lead us away from faith entirely.
We see this illustrated in the story of the rich young ruler who wanted to follow Christ but walked away sad when Jesus told him to sell everything and give to the poor. His love of wealth prevented him from fully committing to following Jesus.
You Cannot Serve Two Masters
Jesus made this principle crystal clear in Matthew 6:24: "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."
The love of money has such powerful influence that it literally becomes a deciding factor for some people's eternity. When we put anything before Christ - when we make an idol of money or possessions - it affects our relationship with God and our eternal destiny.
Who Really Owns Your Money?
Everything Belongs to God
Here's a perspective shift that changes everything: all money, including what's in your bank account, belongs to God. You might think, "But I worked hard for this money!" And that's true - but you're managing and stewarding resources that ultimately belong to God.
Scripture makes this abundantly clear:
Psalm 24:1 states, "The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein."
Deuteronomy 10:14 declares, "Behold, to the Lord your God belong heaven and the heaven of heavens, the earth with all that is in it."
Haggai 2:8 reminds us, "The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts."
We are incredibly small in comparison to God's greatness. While He loves us deeply, we are not the center of the universe. Everything we "own" is actually God's, and we've been made stewards or managers of His resources.
What Does Your Spending Reveal About Your Heart?
Money Cannot Be Separated from the Heart
How we handle money is directly connected to the condition of our hearts. Jesus said in Matthew 6:21, "For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also."
You can tell what's important to someone by looking at what they spend their money on. We reveal what we worship and who has authority in our lives by where our money willingly and generously goes.
This is why God disciplined His people in the Old Testament when they brought offerings with hearts that weren't in the right place. Their giving wasn't willing, generous, or done out of true worship - it was hypocritical.
How Does This Change Everything?
Beliefs Shape Behavior
What we believe about money will directly influence how we behave with money. When we renew our minds with God's Word and begin thinking about finances the way He does, our actions naturally follow.
Understanding these three foundational truths will transform how you approach every financial decision:
Money is a spiritual matter with eternal implications
All resources belong to God - you're a steward, not an owner
Your financial choices reveal the true condition of your heart
The Lordship Connection
This isn't ultimately about tithing or church offerings - it's about lordship. If Jesus is truly Lord of your life, then He's also Lord of your resources. When we surrender our finances to God's principles and authority, we position ourselves to experience His provision and blessing in miraculous ways.
Many believers have experienced God's supernatural provision when they've made Him Lord over their finances - from unexpected job opportunities to debt being wiped away to vehicles being provided exactly when needed.
Life Application
This week, take an honest inventory of your relationship with money. Examine your bank statements, credit card bills, and spending habits. What do they reveal about what you truly value and worship?
Challenge yourself to pray this prayer: "Jesus, if you are Lord of my life, you are also Lord of my resources. I surrender my finances to your authority and principles."
Consider these questions as you reflect on this message:
Am I treating money as merely a physical resource, or do I recognize it as a spiritual matter?
Do I live like everything I have belongs to God, or do I act like I'm the true owner?
What does my spending reveal about the condition of my heart and what I truly worship?
In what ways might the love of money be competing with my love for God?
How would my financial decisions change if I truly believed Jesus was Lord over my resources?
