Will You Be The One?
Can One Person Really Change the World? The Power of Complete Surrender to God
What happens when someone gives a completely surrendered "yes" to God? When they work through their crisis of belief, pick up their cross, and fully die to self to follow what God is calling them to do? The answer might surprise you - and it might just change everything about how you view your own potential impact.
When Revival Transforms Entire Communities
Imagine your city being turned upside down because one person decided to be completely sold out and obedient to Christ. Picture divorce rates dropping to almost nothing, substance abuse declining rapidly, crime disappearing, and thousands of people coming into relationship with Jesus - all because one individual chose complete surrender.
This isn't just wishful thinking. We've seen it happen before in history.
The Welsh Revival: A Powerful Example
The Welsh Revival of 1904 began through the passionate ministry of Evan Roberts, a 27-year-old coal miner turned evangelist. Burdened by deep conviction that God desired to awaken the nation, Roberts prayed fervently for revival and called people to complete surrender to Christ, repentance from sin, public confession, obedience to the Holy Spirit, and bold witness for Jesus.
Within just a few months, over 100,000 people professed faith in Christ. The cultural impact was dramatic and visible throughout local communities:
Taverns and pubs lost much of their business as people abandoned drunkenness and gambling
Crime rates dropped so significantly that judges had few cases to try and some courtrooms temporarily closed
Police officers found themselves directing crowds at revival meetings instead of making arrests
In one town, crime dropped so low that policemen formed a band
Families were restored as husbands returned home and marriages were reconciled
Employers noticed increased honesty and diligence among workers
Even mining horses became confused because miners had stopped using profanity
God's Promise for Transformation
This kind of transformation aligns with God's redemptive desire for people, as seen in 2 Chronicles 7:14: "If my people who are called by my name humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land."
God has a redemptive plan, and He invites us to join Him in that plan. The basis is what He has done through the cross of Christ, but then His church - you and I - have a part to play.
King Josiah: A Biblical Example of One Person's Impact
About 300 years after Solomon's Temple was dedicated, we see this principle played out through King Josiah. He became king at just 8 years old, born into a kingdom far from God. When he was in his twenties, workers found the book of the Law in the temple.
As the book was read to Josiah, he immediately recognized something was wrong - they weren't following God's commands. Scripture tells us "he tore his robes" in distress. Josiah then called together all the people and renewed the covenant with the Lord.
The Bible says of Josiah: "Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with the law of Moses" (2 Kings 23:25).
What About Your Excuses?
You might be thinking of reasons why this doesn't apply to you. Let's address some common objections:
"But I Don't Have Power or Leadership Like Josiah"
You carry more power and leadership in your sphere of influence than you realize. Whether it's your family, job, or school, you are more of an influencer than you think. One person fully submitted to God can do tremendous things in their sphere of influence.
"But I'm Too Young/Too Old"
Age is just a number in God's kingdom. Throughout history, God has used people of all ages who felt they were beyond being used by Him.
"But I Have a Past"
Josiah came out of generational evil - his father and grandfather were two of the most wicked men in Judah's history. Your past does not disqualify you from being used by God. Abraham, Moses, David, Peter, Paul, and Rahab the prostitute were all used by God in magnificent ways despite their past.
"But My Life is Mundane and Boring"
This might be where you're getting somewhere, because it's true - most of us aren't a big deal. We have mundane, routine lives that seem to have little influence. But Jesus said, "Whoever is faithful in little will be faithful in much" (Luke 16:10).
Paul reminds us: "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weakness so that the power of Christ may rest upon me" (2 Corinthians 12:9).
It's our faithfulness in little things and our weakness that God uses most. In the upside-down kingdom, God takes the weak things of the world to shame the strong.
The Call to Complete Surrender
Here's the challenging truth: complete surrender to Jesus means some things have to go. There might be shows you need to stop watching, music you need to stop listening to, habits you need to break. To be above reproach, you might have to give some things up.
The early disciples were so sold out that they were willing to give their lives for the gospel. You don't give your life for a lie - you give your life for something bigger.
It's time to stop playing games with faith. It's time to lay some things down, pick up your cross, die to self, and say yes to Jesus - not just in the big things, but in your routine and mundane daily life.
What Could Happen?
If Jesus took 120 people in an upper room who were fully surrendered to Him, filled them with His Spirit, and they went out and turned the whole world upside down, what could He do with fully surrendered believers today?
Your families could be impacted because you said yes to Jesus fully. Kids could come to Christ, spouses could be saved, and generational patterns could be changed because you stopped being lukewarm and dove in completely.
You still do life - work, raise kids, handle responsibilities - but within that, when Jesus speaks, you listen and obey.
Life Application
This week, examine your life for areas where you're holding back from complete surrender to God. Are there entertainment choices, relationships, habits, or attitudes that you know don't align with following Jesus wholeheartedly? Choose one specific area and take a concrete step toward surrender.
Remember, God wants to use your faithfulness in small things and even your weaknesses for His glory. You don't have to be perfect or powerful - you just need to be willing.
Ask yourself these questions:
What is one area of my life where I've been holding back from complete obedience to God?
How might my family, workplace, or community be different if I lived with complete surrender to Jesus?
What small step of faithfulness can I take this week that demonstrates my willingness to say "yes" to whatever God asks of me?
Am I willing to give up comfort, convenience, or personal preferences if God calls me to something greater?
One surrendered life can indeed change everything. The question is: will that life be yours?
